The Eighth Evacuation Hospital was authorized on March 2, 1942, organized, and then dispatched in July 1942 to attend the largely medical problems that arose from army troops themselves beginning training for combat involvement. This was not a new or unknown activity for the University of Virginia, for in World War I it had sponsored Base Hospital 41 which was sent to Paris, France in July 1918, remaining there until the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918.
